Remodel Cost FAQ

The questions homeowners ask most before a kitchen or bathroom remodel — answered with the same ranges our calculators use, so you can check any answer against the tools themselves.

How much does a kitchen remodel cost?

A mid-range kitchen remodel typically costs about $140–$260 per square foot in the US — roughly $21,000–$39,000 for a 150 sq ft kitchen. Budget refreshes run about $75–$145 per sq ft and high-end custom kitchens $265–$500 per sq ft. Region matters: expect roughly 25% above the national midpoint in the Northeast and 15% below it in the South. Get your itemized figure from the kitchen remodel cost calculator.

How much does a bathroom remodel cost?

A mid-range bathroom remodel typically runs about $190–$380 per square foot — roughly $11,500–$23,000 for a 60 sq ft full bathroom. Small bathrooms cost less overall but more per square foot, because plumbing and labor are largely fixed costs. Try the bathroom remodel cost calculator or the small bathroom calculator for your size.

How accurate are these calculators?

They are planning estimates built from typical US per-square-foot cost bands per line item, adjusted for finish level and region. They are designed to land you in the right range and to give you a line-by-line checklist for comparing bids — not to predict a specific contractor's price, which depends on your layout, materials and local market conditions.

Why do contractor bids differ so much from each other?

Scope and assumptions. One bid may include permits, waterproofing and mid-grade fixtures; another may quietly exclude them and still look cheaper. Bids also price different materials under the same words ("tile", "cabinets"). An itemized comparison — like the breakdowns our calculators produce — is the reliable way to see what each bid actually contains.

How much contingency should I budget?

About 10–15% beyond your estimate is a sensible planning buffer for a kitchen or bathroom remodel, and more in older homes. Water damage, subfloor rot and outdated wiring are the classic bathroom and kitchen surprises, and they are only visible once walls and floors are open.

What is the cheapest way to remodel a kitchen or bathroom?

Keep the layout exactly as it is. Moving plumbing, drains or gas lines is the most expensive category of change in both rooms. After that: reface or paint cabinets instead of replacing them, choose stock sizes and mid-range durable materials, and do cosmetic work (paint, hardware, lighting) yourself if you are able.

Is RemodelCostCalc free? Do you sell my information?

The calculators are completely free with no sign-up, and they run in your browser — the numbers you enter are not uploaded or stored by us. Our planned revenue is a flat-price calculator embed for contractors, whose estimate requests go only to that contractor, never resold to others.

I am a contractor. How do I put this calculator on my site?

We are preparing an embeddable version: your branding, your region, and itemized estimate requests delivered to your inbox for a planned flat $29/month with no per-lead fees. It is not on sale yet — join the founding list on the For Contractors page to be notified at launch.
